Ansur — Wyrmway

Act 3 Updated 2026.05.11

Legendary undead dragon beneath Wyrm's Rock. Lightning breath, storm clouds, massive HP. Unlocked via Wyll's questline (The Blade of Frontiers) and the Wyrmway puzzle trials.

Ansur — Wyrmway Dragon

Location: Wyrmway, beneath Wyrm’s Rock Fortress. Requires completing Wyll’s questline and passing the Wyrmway puzzle trials (4 chambers).

Pre-Fight Checklist

  1. Long rest before entering the Wyrmway chambers.
  2. Heroes’ Feast + Aid — massive HP buffs. Ansur hits VERY hard.
  3. Elixir of Lightning Resistance on everyone — Ansur’s main damage is Lightning. Storm Sorc already has lightning resistance (Heart of the Storm at L6).
  4. Elixir of Vigilance on everyone.
  5. Bring Counterspell — Ansur has devastating AoE spells.
  6. Stoneskin on Lae’zel (Shadowheart pre-cast).

Boss Mechanics

Storm CloudsAnsur summons storm clouds that deal periodic Lightning damage. Move out of them.
Gathering PowerAnsur channels for 1 turn, gaining energy. Next turn: massive nova (point-blank AoE). HIDE behind the ice crystals or run to the edge of the arena.
Legendary Action: Wing BuffetKnocks everyone back + Prone. STR save.
Hoarding EnergyIn Honour Mode, Ansur stores energy each turn he’s not hit with Radiant damage.

Phase 1 — Dragon Aerial

Ansur flies around the arena, using Lightning Breath and summoning storms.

Tactics

TacticDetail
Spread outLightning Breath is a cone. Everyone at different angles — if you’re all in front, you all die.
Radiant damagePrevents Ansur from Hoarding Energy (Honour Mode only). Spirit Guardians (Radiant), Blood of Lathander, Divine Smite.
CounterspellCounterspell his Lightning Breath if you can — it’s a spell, not a natural ability (verified on bg3.wiki: Ansur’s breath is a spell-like, Counterspell works).
Stay out of cloudsMove out of the electrified zones immediately.

Party Assignment

BuildRole
Storm SorcCounterspell Lightning Breath. Lightning Bolt does reduced damage (resistance) — use Magic Missile / Disintegrate instead.
Wild Magic SorcDisintegrate. Wall of Fire if Ansur lands.
ShadowheartSpirit Guardians (Radiant) — prevents Hoarding Energy. Healing Word on anyone taking breath damage.
BardadinDivine Smite (highest slots, Radiant). Aura of Protection for saves.
Lae’zelGWM nova when Ansur lands. Action Surge. Radiant damage if possible (Silver Sword bonus).
AstarionSharpshooter. Arrow of Dragon Slaying (double damage vs dragons).
ThrowzerkerEnraged Throw when Ansur lands (auto-prone).

Phase 2 — Gathering Power (Nova)

Ansur lands and channels for 1 turn. The UI prompts: “Ansur is gathering power…”

Survival

  1. Do NOT attack him — focus on survival.
  2. Hide behind ice crystals — the arena spawns large ice formations. They block the nova damage. Everyone get behind one.
  3. Run to the arena edge — if you can’t reach a crystal, run as far away as possible. The nova is centered on Ansur.
  4. Globe of Invulnerability — cast it behind a crystal and wait out the nova.

After the nova, Ansur is briefly vulnerable. Dump everything.

Honour Mode Specifics

  • Hoarding Energy is lethal. Ansur gains +1 to damage and attack rolls per turn of stored energy. Without Radiant damage every round, he becomes unstoppable by turn 5-6. Always have someone dealing Radiant (Shadowheart Spirit Guardians, Bardadin Smites, Blood of Lathander).
  • Lightning Breath can TPK. In Honour Mode, it’s 12d10 Lightning instead of 10d10. One breath on a clustered party = wipe. Spread out, Counterspell, Lightning Resistance elixirs.
  • Gathering Power nova is also buffed in Honour Mode. Don’t try to tank it — ALWAYS hide.

Post-Fight

  • Loot Ansur: Balduran’s Giantslayer (legendary greatsword, double STR mod, Giant Form).
  • Altar behind Ansur: Helm of Balduran (legendary helmet, immune to crits/stun, heal 2 HP/turn, +1 AC/saves).
  • Wyll’s questline concludes — he faces the truth about his father and Ansur.
